World Cup Runners–Up

The Netherlands were runners–up in 1974, 1978 and 2010. The respective winners in those three years were West Germany, Argentina and Spain.

West Germany and Argentina are the two other countries that have been runners-up three times: Argentina in 1930, 1990 and 2014, and West Germany in 1966, 1982 and 1986. Germany were also runners-up in 2002. But they have both won the tournament - Argentina twice (1978 and 1986) and West Germany three times (1954, 1974 and 1990). Germany have won it once (2014).

Four countries have been runners-up twice: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Brazil and Italy. Of those, Brazil have won it five times and Italy four; neither Czechoslovakia nor Hungary have ever won it.

Only two countries have been runners-up just once: Sweden (1958) and France (2006). France won it in 1998; Sweden have never won it.
